With a title like "Crimes Against Humanity" a reader might expect an exposition on the Hiroshima anniversary, the torture going on at American military concentration camps and domestic prisons, or the illegal war and devastation of the Iraqi state along with a guesstimated civilian death toll of a hundred thousand or so potential terrorists. We might challenge the 'creationism' of terms like 'The Fire Of Freedom' to better understand that black is white or white is black. In foreign policy, clearly the entire world, with the exception of tiny, bribed East European states called the 'coalition of the willing, are just plain wrong to resist America's magnificant mantifest destiny redux. Little did we know only a few years ago that 'leave no child behind' and a 'thousand points of light' were synonyms for the neo-Dresden of the Middle East–Falleuja etc.
But no, we turn instead to the glories of domestic policies that guarantee two chinese chickens in every pot, cheaper than your local farmer, thanks to Wal-Mart; an upsurge in new jobs at minimum wage and no benefits to replace those old union jobs that paid so well, thanks again to Wal-Mart and Gallo Wines; 'Clean Skies' that give us polluted air and higher levels of mercury in our water; "Save the Forests' which opens wilderness areas to mining and logging for their own good and the list goes on.
After five years of the Bush administration nothing much suprises us anymore when it comes to syntax and meaning, except that what ever smiley-face metaphor that is used to promote our national rape it is first to be assumed an out and out lie–believed as an alternate reality to daily life with the weariness that citizens under the old Soviet system once exhibited. Whatever heaping pile of push the Bushies serve up you know its name is in 'reality' just the opposite.
By changing truth into the reality of propaganda and the democratic principles of justice into 'activist' law the corporate oligarchy that has now usurped democracy in America has progressed since the Nixon/Regean years to a neo-con alternate reality sweetened with corporate advertising and language jingoism, a vision of America that only George Orwell could have articulated.
Language creates reality, but not necessarily truth. Journalist Paul Krugman recentlly wrote:
"Corporations followed his lead (Irving Kristol, the neoconservative former editor of the Public Interest), pouring a steady stream of money into think tanks that created a sort of parallel intellectual universe, a world of "scholars" whose career are based on toeing an ideological line, rather than on doing research that stands up to scrutiny by their peers."
Orwell ,writing in his future vision of totalitarian capitalism titled 1984, was presciently only twenty years off the mark:
"Political language is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to generate appearance of solidity to pure wind."
For the past fifty years or so post war America has been shifting its paradigm of governance from enlightened democratic humanism to corporate orthodoxy where in authority flows from the top down and not from an electoral base. Corporations used to be the generally benign engines of national wealth in which the greatest benefits were distributed for the welfare of all society. That certainly isn't true now. Corporations now rule us, purchase congress on both sides of the isle and promote a 'soma-like' message and re-create history to anesthetise the subjects of its rule. Commercial language is the reality of American life.
"From the totalitarian point of view, history is something to be created rather than learned" ( George Orwell )American values and 'way of life' have shifted from human and civil rights to shopping and religious pornography. President George is the perfect avatar for this entropic collapse of 'thinking' citizens. The first thing he said after reading the "Little Goat' and the 9/11 disaster was to go about shopping as normal and couching the attack on America in orthodox Christian religious jingoism–"the evil doers."
Bush is a pathological narcissist as are most of his most powerful advisors and civilian henchpires. He is virtually incapable of a genuine empathy not related to his personal self interest. Orwell writes:
"Orthoxoxy (read neo-con) means not thinking—not needing to think. Orthodox is unconsciousness." 1984
Orthodoxy combined with its evil twin authoritarian religion (read radical dominionism) creates the path to a corruption of democracy and the ease with which totalitarianism seeps in to assure its comfortable unthinking certainity and pleasing corporate language of pleasure and consumerism. Orwell could have been describing America of 2005 when he wrote:
"A totalitarian state is in effect a theocracy, and its ruling caste, in order to keep its position, has to be thought of as infallible. But since, in practice, no one is infallible, it is frequently necessary to rearrange past events in order to show that this or that mistake (WMD's?) was not made, or that this or that imaginary triumphe actually happened." from "The Prevention of Literature."
Chances are if you don't live in a gated community you are not part of the ruling caste, so listen up. The worst is yet to come. Orwell couldn't have invented a better example of totalitarianism's shiny new dollar side than George Bush or its dark, grimy, dirty other side than Rove, Cheney, Rice, Rumsfeldt and their gollum gofers. What we see in the Bush administration is not traditional democratic public interest, but a bold and raw power grab to distribute the greatest good to the fewest tax free "haves and have mores" (as Bush once said)
Taking a page or two straight from Machiavelli, who wrote the text on totalitarianism, Orwell echoes the Bushies perpetual war mongering:
"The war is not meant to be won, it is meant to be continuous. Hierachial society is only possible on the basis of poverty and ignorance. The new version is the past and no different past can ever have existed. (Evil Doers!) In principle the war effort is always planned to keep society on the brink of starvation. The war is waged by the ruling group against its own subjects and its object is not the victory over either Eurasia or East Asia, but to keep the very structure of society intact."
We have said before and say it here again that it will come as no surprise when at the end of Bush's second term a major threat to America will be manufactured or permitted to unfold in order to 'protect' the nation and allow this 'war' president a third or even fourth term in office. "If you want to imagine the future imagine a boot stamping on a human face forever." (George Orwell)
How does all this play out in 'real life'? Two recent illustrations come to mind:
1.) MandT and Harry Hound volunteer for a local food bank and deliver groceries to folks, who because of illness or lack of means seldom leave their homes. Five of the group are younger women, with children, who have immune comprised illnesses, or cancer, or worse. Almost all of them live on Social Security and SSI and get section 8 housing subsidies. Thank to the 'compassionate conservatism' of Bush Republicans and the toady corporate Democrates in congress the subsidity has been cut by up to 70% in most cases in our County. If most of our clients are living on about $700.00 a month and paying a former rent of $300.00 a month you can quickly deduce that the human suffering about to unfold is going to be enormous. The deadly fleurs de mort of Christian Bushies are about to bloom.
2.) Justice and law have long since been incompatible in America. A recent case in Fresno California shows the depths of insanity that has now consumed civil justice. On April 29, 2005 11-year old Maribel Cuevas, threw a rock at a group of bully boys, who were pelting her with rocks and water balloons. She pick up the stone and bounced it off the head of one of the little bastards in an act of defending herself. Fresno police officers, as about as bright as pond scum, arrested the little girl, brought her up on felony charges, chained her like a criminal, and kept her jailed for nearly a week.
The case goes forward. But, we hope you are as outraged by these cretin cops and the abysmal stupidity of this police power gone wrong as are we. If you're not, don't troll here. there will be no mercy. If an 11 year old girl can be treated in this fashion, absolutely no one in this country is safe. In line with Orwell's warning that lies are made to sound truthful, the Fresno Mayor and Police Department say the girl is a dangerous felon and must wear a monitoring bracelet until her 'criminal' trial begins.
It is time for revolution in this country. And we believe the first step is in line with this Orwellian hope:
"In times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act."
Keep on blogging.
