For the first time in what must be

The better part of two years now

I happened to hear Janis

In her glory—-

All that tinctured syrup

Dripping off

A razorblade—-

On the radio today singing “Summertime.”

I was twenty years old

What did I know?

What could I say?

I could not think

Of anything to say,

Except, “Yes,

I guess so.”

It was summertime.

Thus runs the world away.

EVENING’S END by Leon Stokesbury 1943-1970)
