Cardboard Box

The cardboard box
Top-flaps opened,
Sat invoking
Inner mysteries
Of the used.

For days,
For weeks
Its  jumbled  tokens
Weathered soaking,

Broken by a
Burning sun,
Long by the
Day and night,

Packed tight
For the peeker
Who might try
The sneakers, or

Business shoes
Whose homely formal

Joined the rest—–
For  the never,
Spoke to me

Of a generous try
Of kindness,
Of pity
Who missed the mark—
For free.
